Steve always loved the TDI for its amazing fuel economy, but he always wanted more power. He wanted us to build a stage 3 turbo setup without sacrificing fuel economy. Well, we managed to maintain the factory 64 mpg and more than doubled the stock horse power and torque. Let's not forget that we rebuilt this monster at 300,000 km, and it is still purring like a kitten.

It all began with Steve approaching EMT knowing our experience with VW and Audi. He had a couple questions about modifications. We kept in touch and soon after, slowly started to modify this TDI. First came the turbo down pipe and cat back exhaust. Soon to follow, he acquired the custom front mounted intercooler kit from EMT. It didn't take much time before Steve wanted a bigger turbo. He pulled the trigger on an EMT VT3 turbo with race 520 7 hole nozzles and a larger 11 mm injection fuel pump. After tearing apart the engine to install a Colt Cam stage 3 we realized the engine needed a rebuild. With the rebuild in mind, we decided to bore the engine out to a 2.0L and installed oversized ASV pistons and rings. We also treated the engine with fresh camshaft, crankshaft and rod bearings, new valves and lifters, SBC stage 2+ endurance clutch kit, fresh timing belt kit, metal propeller water pump, cold air intake, custom old mans pipe, egr and cooler delete, and 3 bar map sensor. All of the engine parameters are monitored by 5 new south performance, colour matched blue gauges. 2 of them in the centre of the steering wheel and 3 in the center console. These include boost, EGT, oil pressure, oil temperature and a voltmeter.

The visual upgrades include 17 inch advanti racing rims with 225/40r17 tires, helix smoked taillights and headlights, shark fin antenna, and Bilstein coil overs. When driving down the street, the car is quite flashy due to the custom headlights, done by Steve's father Mike Kurchina. With 3 HID kits installed in each headlamp, the wiring is completely custom and independent from the stock electrical system, with the ability to have any combination of lights on at a time. 4 switches, located above the driver's left knee, activate the low beam (10000k), high beam (6000k), fog lights (30000k) or angel eyes at the driver's discretion. The car is always a work progress with more upgrades to come this summer, such as a wavetrac LSD and new transmission.
